While Cancun’s Hotel Zone is an exhilarating place to be, some delectable authentic Mexican treats exist only ten minutes away in downtown Cancun (Cancun Centro or El Centro). This is where the Mexican locals and foreign expatriates live and it provides a more realistic example of daily Mexican life. Fast moving, Cancun Centro moves to a different pace than the Hotel Zone, so take a deep breath and join in.
Cancun Centro is the place to find the best prices on virtually anything, including authentic Mexican food at street stands, food courts, and restaurants in Parque de Las Palapas (Palapas Park) or Mercado 28 (Market 28). A variety of delicious treats and traditional items are available here, such as Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus flower juice – delicious and healthy), Esquites with chiles and lime (corn kernel blend – very tasty), leather sandals, and Talavera pottery.
Plaza Las Americas/Malecon Americas, located close to the Hotel Zone entrance on Bonampak Avenue is the biggest shopping mall in Cancun and features department stores and shops, restaurants and bars, salons, kids’ activities and a movie theater.
