The enchanting island of Isla Mujeres (island of the women) is just a short ferry ride from Cancun’s port and is worth spending a day there. Only five miles long by two-and-a-half miles wide, the island is just a 20-minute ferry ride from the dock at Playa Tortugas in the hotel zone.
The “isla” is a laid back place where anyone can do anything their heart desires, from snorkeling or swimming with the dolphins – at Dolphin Discovery on Isla Mujeres – to visiting a sea turtle sanctuary or a pirate’s fortress (Fortress of Mundac).
Also on the island is Garrafon National Park, a natural coral reef park with various attractions and activities, such as touring a sculpture garden which honors the Mayans or visiting the Mayan temple erected to the fertility goddess, Ixchel. It’s also a great place for zip-lining across the island or relaxing in a hammock with beautiful ocean views.
