Imagine a place with some of nature’s finest features from pleasant year-round temperatures and white sand beaches to tropical rainforests and a dazzling lagoon. That place is Cancun, on the border of the Riviera Maya in the Mexico Caribbean and is filled with beautiful landscapes, water sports and beach activities, sophisticated shopping centers, local craft shops, delightful spas, cultural tours and attractions, and some of the best restaurants and nightclubs in the area. Cancun is 20 to 30 minutes southwest of Cancun International Airport and is conveniently located near many popular travel places such as Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and the Mayan ruins of Tulum, Coba, and Chichen Itza.
While the Cancun hotel zone is an exhilarating place to be, some delectable authentic Mexican treats exist only ten minutes away in downtown Cancun (Cancun Centro or El Centro). This is where the Mexican locals and foreign expatriates live, and provides a more realistic example of daily Mexican life. Fast moving and packed full of activities, Cancun Centro moves to a different pace than the hotel zone, so take a deep breath and join in.
Cancun Centro is the place to find the best prices on virtually anything, including authentic Mexican food at street stands, food courts, and restaurants in Parque de Las Palapas (Palapas Park) or Mercado 28 (Market 28). A variety of delicious treats and traditional items are available here, such as Aqua de Jamaica (Hibiscus flower juice – delicious and healthy), Esquites with chiles and lime (corn kernel blend – very tasty), leather sandals, and Talavera pottery. There are also many sidewalk cafes, bars, and charming restaurants on Avenida Tulum and Avenida Nader.
