The Chameleon Mayakoba is an exclusive design by renowned golfer Greg Norman located in the luxury resort, Fairmont Mayakoba. This 18 hole, par 72 course is located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, just 45 minutes south of Cancun and just 6.4 km (19 minutes) from Hacienda Tres Rios. This course offers players the chance to golf in the same place where the greats have. The Mayakoba Golf Classic has been held at the Chameleon since 2007 and was the first official PGA TOURtournament to be held outside of the U.S. The tournament will take place February 22-26, 2012.

Why Chameleon?

This name refers to the changes in the course and the tropical landscape that can be viewed from it, such as the tropical jungle and mangrove swamps that characterize this area. In addition, large expanses of white sand beach, spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea and long channels of limestone all make up the course. The Chameleon was carefully planned to capture the essence of a landscape.

Features

Unique in its design encompassing 7,039 yards, the course is one of the best, not only in Mexico, but in the whole realm of golf. The first hole is a par 5 that plays 554 yards from left to right. The wide fairway is separated by a lush cenote. The green tilts from left to right and is protected by traps on both sides. A good shot with a 3 wood on the green will leave you with a 9 iron or less of the green.

Hole 15 is the one that gives a touch of magic to the Chameleon. Just 160 yards from the marker, the hole is located directly facing the vibrant Caribbean Sea. The long green is the perfect place for a glorious shot while the sounds of ocean waves soothe the spirit of the golfer. However, do not be fooled. This hole is not easy, especially when the tropical winds are blowing.

For those who want to learn the best techniques, the course also features a 360 yard practice range.

Did you know?

• There is a beautiful cenote (natural sinkhole) in the heart of the initial fairway.
• In 2009, the course became home to the first and only McLean Jim Golf Academy in Mexico.

Services

The services are just as amazing as the course. The Mayan influenced clubhouse boasts an Argentinean restaurant overlooking picturesque Hole 18, and a pro shop which carries state of the sportswear, equipment and accessories from top brands. Golf carts are equipped with advanced GPS yardage and software. Golfers can electronically record their score and order food and drinks from their cart.

Acknowledgments

Since its inception in 2006 the course has been the recipient of many awards, including Travel + Leisure magazine’s award for Best Golf Course, the Development of the Year Award by Golf Inc., and recognition as the Best International Golf Course by Golf Magazine, among others. It is also certified by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, which monitored the construction phase in order to ensure protection and conservation of natural areas and wildlife.
