You may think you know how to drink your tequila…in a margarita, a tequila sunrise, a slammer, or straight up with lime and salt. However, tequila is also delicious with these easy and common mixers which include liqueurs, soft drinks and fruit juices. Try them at home or on your next vacation in Cancun, the Riviera Maya or Playa del Carmen. You can also experiment with different types of tequila.
Kahlua or Baileys
Yes, believe it or not tequila adds the perfect bite to these sweet liqueurs. Tequila and Kahlua is sometimes called a Brave Bull or a Kahlua Cockroach. Tequila and Baileys goes by the name Baileys Tequila Dream.
Rum and cola, ok, but tequila and cola? Yes! Tequila and cola is called a Charro Negro which means “black cowboy”. This drink is even tastier when made with añejo or aged tequila. Add a little lime juice for the perfect cocktail.
Combine tequila, grapefruit soda, lime, and a pinch of salt and you have a Paloma (dove). This is probably the most popular tequila cocktail in Mexico after the margarita. Or try substituting natural grapefruit juice for the soda.
Tequila Cranberry is the clever name of this refreshing cocktail. Add grape juice and you’ll have a Tequila Twilight. Arandano is the word for cranberry in Spanish and grape is uva. A cranberry margarita is another way to combine cranberry juice and tequila.
Often combined with tequila to create a shooter, ginger ale is also surprisingly good as a mixer. White tequila can be used but añejo is especially good with ginger ale. For extra kick, add a drop or two of your favorite hot sauce!
We all know and love a good mojito, but adding those ingredients and replacing it with tequila creates a refreshing twist. Mix tequila, lime pulp, mint leaves, sugar & ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Pour contents from shaker into an old-fashioned glass. Finish with a dash of seltzer and lemon-lime soda.
